Lesson 78 | Making inferences

文型一：　VERB／いADJECTIVE／なADJECTIVEだ／NOUNだ《普通形》でしょう　「It will probably...」 (See Lesson 51 for another use of this pattern.)

Notes:

• This pattern expresses the speaker's inference from some information he/she has. 
• きっと and 多分（たぶん） can be used with this sentence pattern, but 多分 is more often used with ～と思います (Lesson 49).

例：
明日きっと雨でしょう。　「It will undoubtedly rain tomorrow.」
だんだん暑くなるでしょう。　「It will probably become hotter gradually.」
友達はもうすぐ来るでしょう。　「My friend will probably come soon.」
今晩は星が見えないでしょう。　「We probably won't be able to see the stars tonight.」
木村さんは映画を見に行かないでしょう。　「Mr. Kimura probably won't go watch the movie because he's busy.」

文型二：　VERB／いADJECTIVE／なADJECTIVEだ／NOUNだ《普通形》でしょうか　「Do you think...?」

Notes:

• In this pattern, the speaker assumes that the listener has some information that will answer the question.
• In VERB／ADJECTIVE／NOUN《普通形》と思いますか, the listener is only makes a guess.

例：
恭子（きょうこ）は試験に合格するでしょうか。　「Do you think Kyoko will pass the exam?」
そのチームは勝つでしょうか。　「Do you think that team will win?」
コンサートは成功するでしょうか。　「Do you think the concert will be a success?」
敦賀（つるが）はパーティーに来るでしょうか。　「Do you think Tsuruga will come to the party?」
桃子（ももこ）は日本へ行くでしょうか。　「Do you think Momoko will go to Japan?」

文型三：　VERB／いADJECTIVE／なADJECTIVEだな／NOUNだな《普通形》かもしれません　「It might...」

Notes:

• This pattern expresses there is a possibility that some event will occur.
• The adverb もしかしたら is often used in this sentence pattern.

例：
授業に間に合わないかもしれません。　「I might not make it in time for the class.」
もしかしたら今年日本へ行けないかもしれません。　「I might not be able to go to Japan this year.」
翔太郎（しょうたろ）は卒業しないかもしれません。　「Shotaro might not graduate.」
彼は会社を辞めるかもしれません。　「He might quit his job.」
彼女は来週忙しいかもしれません。　「She might be busy next week.」
