Lesson 77 | Giving Suggestions

文型一：　VERB《た形》／VERB《ない形》　ほうがいいです　「You had better...」

Notes:

• This pattern is used to make suggestions or to give advice.
• This expression may sound like you are imposing your opinion on the listener, so consider the context of the conversation before using it.
• This pattern implies a comparison and a choice between two things even if it is not expressed in words.

例：
毎日水をたくさん飲んだほうがいいです。　「It is good to drink lots of water everyday.」
練習したほうがいいです。　「You had better practice.」
来月試験がありますから、勉強したほうがいいです。　「There's an exam next week, so you had better study.」
体に悪いですから、たばこを吸わないほうがいいです。　「You had better not smoke because it is bad for your health.」
熱がある時、お風呂に入らないほうがいいです。　「When you have a fever, you had better not take a bath.」

文型二：　 VERB《た形》　らいいです　「It would be a good idea to...」

Note:

• This pattern illustrates a situation in which a simple suggestion is given.

例：
何処で日本語本を買ったらいいですか。　「Where should I buy Japanese books?」
○　日本本屋で買ったらいいです。　「It would be a good idea to buy it Nippon Bookstore.」

日本へ行きたいんですが、どうしたらいいですか。　「I want to go to Japan. What should I do?」
○　旅行社に連絡したらいいです。　「It would be a good idea to contact travel agency.」

電話番号が分からないんですが、どうやって調べたらいいですか。　「I don't know a telephone number. How should I inquire about it?」
○　インターネットで調べたらいいです。　「It would be a good idea to search it via the internet.」

北海道のレストランへ行きたいんですが、どのバスに乗ったらいいですか。　「I want to go to this restaurant at Hokkaido. Which bus should I take?」
○　２０番のバスに乗ったらいいです。　「It would be a good idea to take the number 20 bus.」

辞書を買いたいんですが、何を買ったらいいですか。　「I want to buy a dictionary. What should I buy?」
○　株式会社講談社の辞書を買ったらいいですよ。　「It would be a good idea to buy the ones published by Kodansha Limited.」
