Lesson 43 | Uses of まえに

文型一：　VERB1《辞書形》　まえに、　VERB2　「Before VERB1, I will VERB2」

Notes:

• 『VERB1《辞書形》まえに、VERB2』VERB1 occurs AFTER VERB2
• 『VERB1《て形》から、VERB2』VERB1 occurs BEFORE VERB2

例：
食べるまえに、手を洗います。　「I will wash my hands before I eat.」
食べてから、歯を磨きます。　「I will brush my teeth after I eat.」
○　手を洗う　→　食べる　→　歯を磨く

JLPTを受けるまえに、日本語を勉強します。　「I will study Japanese before I take the JLPT.」
JLPTを受けてから、日本へ行きます。　「I will go to Japan after I take the JLPT.」
○　日本語を勉強する　→　JLPTを受ける　→　日本へ行く

友達と会うまえに、用事をします。　「I will run an errand before I meet my friend.」
友達と会ってから、映画を見ます。　「I will watch a movie after I meet with my friend.」
○　用事をする　→　友達と会う　→　映画を見ます

宿題をするまえに、先生に聞きます。　「I will ask my teacher before do my homework.」
宿題をしてから、休みます。　「I will rest after I do my homework.」
○　先生に聞く　→　宿題をする　→　休む

銀行へ行くまえに、働きます。　「I will work before I go to the bank.」
銀行へ行ってから、コンビニへ買い物に行きました。　「I went shopping in a convenience store after I went to the bank.」
○　働く　→　銀行へ行く　→　コンビニへ買い物に行く

文型二：　NOUN　の　まえに　VERB

Note:

• Sometimes, the nouns that are used here are nouns that express or implies actions. In any case, these nouns always occur AFTER the verb.

例：
コピーのまえに、コピー機を点けます。　「Turn on the photocopying machine before you photocopy.」
旅行のまえに、パスポートを持ったなければなりません。　「You must have a passport before you travel.」
クリスマスのまえに、プレゼントを買います。　「I buy presents before Christmas.」
勉強のまえに、食べました。　「I ate before I studied.」
クラスのまえに、宿題をします。　「Please do your homework before the class.」

文型三：　TIME　まえに　VERB

Notes:

• While まえに means "before" in 文型一 and 文型二, it means "ago" when attached to a time period.
• TIME is a noun, but の is not necessary.

例：
三年まえに日本語を勉強し始めました。　「Three years ago, I began to study Japanese.」
ショウ・ルオは五日まえに台湾でコンサートがありました。　「Show Luo had a concert in Taiwan five days ago.」
二年まえにコンピューターの会社を働きました。　「I worked in a computer company two years ago.」
五年まえにオーストラリアへ行きました。　「I went to Australia five years ago.」
一年まえに私は会社を止めました。　「I quit my job a year ago.」
