Lesson 39 | Turning a DO into a TOPIC by replacing を with は

You can turn a direct object into a topic by moving the direct object (with its particle を) to the front of the sentence and changing the particle attached into は.

例：

ボールペンを使わないでください。　「Please don't use a ballpoint pen.」

→　ボールペンは使わないでください。　「As for ballpoint pens, please don't use them.」

外でたばこを吸ってください。　「Please smoke your cigarette outside.」

→　たばこは外で吸ってください。　「As for cigarettes, please smoke them outside.」

昼食を食堂で食べました。　「I eat lunch at the cafeteria.」

→　昼食は食堂で食べました。　「As for lunch, I eat it at the cafeteria.」

日本語を勉強したいです。　「I want to learn Japanese.」

→　日本語は勉強したいです。　「As for Japanese, I want to learn it.」

ここに荷物を置かないでください。　「Please don't put your parcel here.」

→　荷物はここに置かないでください。　「As for the parcel, please don't put it here.」
