Lesson 65 | だけ VS しか

文型一：　QUANTIFIER／NOUN　だけ　「Only...」

Note:

• だけ is added after quantifiers or nouns to express that there is nothing or no one else.

例：
三年前に平仮名（ひらがな）だけ読めます。　「Three years ago, I'm can only write Hiragana.」
私はピアノだけ弾けます。　「I can only play the piano.」
私のクラスに中国人は三人だけいます。　「There are only three Chinese in my class.」
水だけを飲みます。　「I only drink water.」
簡単な漢字だけ書けます。　「I can only write simple Kanji.」

文型二：　QUANTIFIER／NOUN／VERB　しか　VERB《否定形》　「Nothing but...」

Note:

• しか is attached to quantifiers, nouns, etc. and is always used with negative verbs to highlight the word before it, make limitations, and negate everything EXCEPT the thing expressed by the word.
• It replaces  が or を, but follows other particles.

例：
三年前に平仮名しか読めません。　「Three years ago, I cannot read anything but Hiragana.」
私はピアノしか弾けません。　「I cannot play anything but the piano.」
私のクラスに中国人は三人しかいません。　「There are but three Chinese in my class.」
水しか飲みません。　「I drink nothing but water.」
ローマ字しか書けません。　「I can't write anything but roman characters.」
