Lesson 20 | COUNTERS

Note:

• Counters are normally placed before the verbs they modify.

例：
私は家に十年いました。　「I stayed in my house for 10 years.」
五十円の切手を二枚（まい）と二十円の切手を五枚ください。　「Give me 2 pieces of 50 yen stamps and 5 pieces of 20 yen stamps please.」
ミリの会社に外国人が四人います。　「There's 5 foreigners at Millie's company.」
私はシャツを五つかいました。　「I brought 5 shirts.」
ジョーシュの家族は全部で七人です。　両親と兄が二人と妹が二人います。　「There are 7 people in Josh's family. His parents, 2 older brothers, 2 younger sisters.」

Note:

• You place counter questions at the same place you would a counter.

例：
日本にどのくらいますか。　「How long will you stay in Japan?」
葉書（はがき）を何枚買いましたか。　「How many post cards did you buy?」
苹果（りんご）をいくつ買いますか。　「How many apples will you buy?」
あなたの会社に外国人が何人いますか。　「How many foreigners are there in your company?」
ソフィアの家族は全部で何人いますか。 「How many people are there in Sofia's family?」

Note:

• While counters are normally placed before verbs, length of time is always placed before 『DIRECT OBJECT を VERB』.

例： 
あなたはどのくらい日本語を習いましたか。　「How long did you learn Japanese?」
○　一年半ぐらい習いました。　「I learned it for about 1 and half years.」

毎週　何時間日本語を勉強しますか。　「How many hours do you study Japanese every week?」
○　三時間半勉強します。　「I study 3 and a half hours ever week.」

来月　何日会社を休みますか。　「How many days will you be off from work next month?」
○　二日会社を休みます。 「I'll be taking 2 days off. from work」

田和さんの家から会社までどのくらいかかりますか。　「How long does it take from Mr. Tawa's house to his office?」
○　車で四十五分ぐらいかかります。　「About 45 minutes by car.」

速達（そくたつ）でどのくらいかかりますか。　「How long will it take by special delivery?」
○　一週間かかります。　「It will take about 1 week.」
