Lesson 6 | Uses of の

の is a particle used to connect two nouns. Among other things, it is used ① to indicate ownership. It should not be confused with この、その、あの, which are always found in front of a noun.
例：　この本は私のです。　「This book is mine.」
その鞄（かばん）はスンさんのです。　「That bag is Mr. Sun's.」
あの傘（かさ）は紅葉君（もみじくん）のです。 「That umbrella over there is Momiji-kun's.」

Another way you can use の to indicate ownership.
例：　これは私の本です。　「This is my book.」
それはスンさんの鞄です。　「That is Mr. Sun's bag.」
あれは紅葉君の傘です。　「That over there is Momiji-kun's umbrella.」

の can be used ② to explain what something is about.
例：　これはコンピューターの本です。　「This is a book on/about computers.」
それはカメラの雑誌（ざっし）です。　「This is a magazine on/about cameras.」
あれは料理のブローシャです。　「This is a brochure on/about cooking.」

It can also be used ③ to explain where something is made or what company made it.
例：　これはブラジルの時計です。　「This is a watch made in Brazil.」
それは韓国の携帯電話です。　「That is a cell phone made in Korea.」
あれはキャーノンのプリンターです。　「That over there is a Canon printer.」

④ Or what company or country a person belongs to.
例：　ベンさんはHSBCの社員です。　「Mr. Ben is an HSBC employee/employee of HSBC.」
リージさんは本田病院の医者です。 「Ms. Lizzie is a Honda Hospital doctor/doctor of Honda Hospital.」
わたしは桜大学（さくらだいがく）の学生です。　「I'm a Sakura University student/student of Sakura University.」
