Lesson 31 | Other uses for VERBています

If you remember from Lesson 28, you can use VERBています to describe an action in progress. However, you can also use this phrase to describe a continuing state which resulted from an action made in the past.

一：　私の兄は結婚しています。　「My brother is married.」
二：　私はショウ・ルオを知っています。　「I know Show Luo.」
三：　ジェイ・チョウは台湾に住んでいます。　「Jay Chou lives in Taiwan.」
四：　私は携帯電話をもっています。　「I have a mobile phone.」

Notes:

• 持っています may mean "to be holding" and "possess".
• You negate VERBて形 as you would a VERBます形. For example, 結婚しています → 結婚していません, もっています → もっていません. Exception: 知っています→ 知りません

VERBています may also be used to describe a habitual action, i.e. an action that is repeatedly performed over a period of time.

一：　アップルはコンピューターと携帯電話とMP3プレーヤーを作っています。　「Apple makes computers, mobile phones, and MP3 players.」
二：　ダイソーで日本の製品を売っています。　「Daiso sells Japanese products.」
三：　 ショウ・ルオはGTVで働いています。　「Show Luo works at GTV.」
四：　私は日本語の学校で勉強しています。　「I study at a Japanese language school.」
